Hatchet/Newbery Summer - Gary Paulsen - Google Books

Hatchet/Newbery Summer - Gary Paulsen - Google Books

I finished the book Hatchet.  I really enjoyed it.  I liked how he learned to be patient.  He found a survival kit and he wasn't sure he liked the ease of doing things it gave him.  He was able to accomplish almost impossible things because he didn't have tools beyond his hatchet and he was alone and had to do it for himself to survive.  It is good to be in a community, but sometimes we tend to think we cannot do things by ourselves since we can go get help, and then we don't learn that amazing feeling of accomplishing things by ourselves.

John Adams: Reluctant Patriot of the Revolution: Leonard Falkner: Books

Amazon.com: John Adams: Reluctant Patriot of the Revolution (9780135100738): Leonard Falkner: Books

I read this in July 2012.  I really enjoyed the book.  John Adams had much integrity.  He avoided a war with France because it was the right thing to do, even though that is not what the people wanted.  He defended a British officer, even though everyone was very upset with the British.  He did it because it was the right thing to do.

Walt Disney by Marie Hammondtree Chapter "Walt Creates a Mouse"

Disney created a lot of movies about a rabbit named Oswald.  He lost the rights to Oswald because he had not clearly read his contract.  So he started new movies about a mouse.  His wife said that Mortimer Mouse was not good and suggested Mickey Mouse.

This is the first Mickey Mouse movie.
"Plane Crazy" 1928 Sound Cartoon

2nd Mickey Mouse Movie
On the 3rd Mickey Mouse movie they had developed a way to have the sound on the film.  It took a lot of work to get the recording just right so it wouldn't blow the tubes on the sound, but they finally created Steamboat Willie.

Later Disney made the Three Little Pigs.  It was his first cartoon to have color.

Then he made a cartoon, The Old Mill, that used a new technique to make it look more 3 dimensional.  He won an academy award for the film.

For making Snow White, he was given a special Oscar with 7 little Oscars, one for each of the 7 Dwarfs.

How can one man pay for the sins of another?

How can one man pay for the sins of another?

Christians teach that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and that his perfect sinless sacrifice is the only way for us to receive eternal forgiveness and life. Muslim leaders reject this idea. They say that even if Jesus did die on the cross it is not possible for him to bear our sin because the Qur'an says,
Every soul earns only to its own account; no soul laden bears the load of another. (Qur'an, 6:164, 17:15, 29:7, 53:38, Arberry)
From verses like these Muslim leaders conclude that it is not possible for Jesus to bear our sin, instead each person can only bear their own load before God. They also point to verses in the Bible which they think teach a similar idea.
Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin. (Deuteronomy 24:16, NIV)
The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him. (Ezekiel 18:20, NIV)
Therefore, are Christians wrong to say that Jesus died for our sins?
I will answer this question in three stages.
  1. What the Qur'an and Hadith actually say.
  2. Reading Deuteronomy 24:16 and Ezekiel 18:20 in context.
  3. What the Bible says about Jesus.
I will also engage with common objections that Muslims have raised with me in debates and emails.

Can someone clarifiy of a line of dialogue in Evan Almighty please?

In the film, right at the beginning, Evan says "I feel like that old Indian in front of all that garbage". I have read in a review that this is the funniest joke in the entire film - but I don't understand it. What sort of an Indian - one from Calcutta or a Red Indian - why would either type sit in front of garbage - what has this got to do with Evan and why is it funny? Please, somebody explain it to me.

This is one of the commercials I remember most from the 70's. I think a lot of people over 40 remember it so that is why they referenced it in the movie.

I understand at last. Of course this joke is not going to work in England without an explanation is it?

Mary Pope Osborne didn't want the movie to take over the imaginations of the children.  She allowed it to be released in Japan, but doesn't want it to come to America.
